The promise left open at the end of Psalm 95 governs this appeal. Israel’s graves in the wilderness prove that rescue from Egypt did not by itself guarantee entrance into God’s rest. “Fear” is therefore the alertness of faith before a gift that can be neglected, not panic before a reluctant or unpredictable God.
The rest is God’s own: participation in what He has accomplished and in the inheritance He has promised. No member should merely “seem” to have missed it. Christian profession, shared worship, and memories of earlier grace cannot replace a present response to His voice.
“Any of you” also makes the summons communal. Chapter 3 has prescribed mutual encouragement while it is called Today, so the congregation must notice when someone is falling behind. Weakness, questions, and a repentant fall call for such care; the wilderness danger is a heart gradually settled against trust. The promise still stands, and the whole community is addressed as it moves toward that rest.
The noun names a place or state of resting and is repeatedly linked in this passage with God’s own rest. Its range here includes the creation pattern, the promise represented by Canaan, present participation through faith, and the inheritance still ahead; context prevents reducing it to a mere inward feeling.
