Hebrews 11:1

“Substance” and “evidence” describe what faith does while God’s promised future remains unseen. Faith gives present weight to what is hoped for and conviction concerning realities that sight cannot yet verify. It is neither imagination made intense nor a force that creates the desired outcome.

The definition grows from 10:35–39. The congregation needs endurance because Christ’s appearing, resurrection, judgment, and the unshakable kingdom still lie ahead. Faith receives those realities through God’s word and orders life around His trustworthiness before fulfillment arrives.

The stories that follow give the terms embodied form. Noah builds, Abraham leaves, Moses chooses reproach, and unnamed sufferers refuse deliverance on unfaithful terms. Their outcomes differ; their common faith rests in the God who speaks.

Word / Phrase Notes

ὑπόστασις (hypostasis) — assurance

The noun can denote confidence, substantial reality, or a firm basis. In ancient documentary use it could describe papers establishing a person’s right to property, which helps explain the familiar ‘title deed’ analogy. Hebrews uses it for settled reliance that gives God’s promised future practical weight now; faith does not create the inheritance but confidently receives God’s pledged right to it.

ἔλεγχος (elenchos) — conviction

Here the word describes inward conviction concerning realities that remain unseen. The conviction arises from God’s trustworthy disclosure and leads to a life ordered by what He has revealed.
